But an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, “Hidden Faces: Covered Portraits of the Renaissance,” reveals how many works of art from the period were deliberately covered by painted panels or shutters, or contained additional compositions on their reverse side. “These multisided and covered portraits have never been the subject of an exhibition before,” said the show’s curator, Alison Manges Nogueira, in a video call with CNN. On the reverse of this portrait, the artist Hans Memling painted one of the first independent still lifes, according to the exhibition. Lou Conter, the last known survivor of the battleship Arizona, which sank with the loss of 1,177 sailors and Marines in Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, plunging the United States into World War II, died on Monday at his home in Grass Valley, Calif. “The ship was consumed in a giant fireball,” he wrote in his memoir, “The Lou Conter Story: From U.S.S. Arizona Survivor to Unsung American Hero” (2021), a collaboration with Annette C. Hull and Warren R. Hull. Mr. Conter, who was knocked forward but uninjured, tended to survivors, many of them blinded and badly burned. Only 93 of those who were aboard the ship at the time lived; 242 other crew members were ashore.

Like many African American professors, I teach at a predominantly white institution (Wheaton College) and live in the largely white small city where it’s located, outside Chicago. When people think about the difficulty of being Black in largely white spaces in America, they tend to picture overt racism. While diversity, equity and inclusion efforts have their flaws in content and implementation, one of their unsung values is that they can help reduce this kind of strain on Black faculty members and students on majority-white campuses; more diversity can help ease our sense of not belonging. Despite the ongoing hysteria around diversity and hiring in higher education, Black faculty members are shockingly uncommon — only 6 percent of professors in this country in 2021. Black faculty members at largely white schools can be subjects of scrutiny based on assumptions that our race rather than our talent won us our positions.

The Oscar-nominated documentary short “The Last Repair Shop” is coming to broadcast television this weekend. The 40-minute film will air Saturday on ABC owned television stations and select affiliates, the studios announced Thursday. “It’s not too much to say I owe my career to people like the four repair people in our film,” Bowers said.
